Let them eat cake in Zimbabwe? By Matthew Clark | Africa editor 03.01.09

British tabloids have taken to calling him ‘Mad Bob.’

On Saturday, Zimbabwe’s president seemed to be living up to the moniker.

Robert Mugabe threw himself a A $250,000 party with 3,000 spectators celebrating his 85th year on this planet.

And, really, what’s a party without a 187-pound cake?

Nevermind that more than half the population is on emergency food aid, that inflation (by far the world’s highest) floats somewhere well above 200 million percent, or that his own government just days ago asked its cash-strapped neighbors for $2 million more in aid.

Oh yeah, and then there’s that cholera epidemic that’s blamed for claiming nearly 4,000 lives in recent months: a tragedy, that stems from government failure at the most basic levels. As the Monitor wrote in a December story, the outbreak even threatens regional stability.

But none of that stopped Mr. Mugabe from throwing such a lavish birthday bash.

This is Mugabe holding back

To be sure, he’s been more extravagent, as The New York Times point out. “But perhaps hard times call for restraint,” quips the paper.

What Mugabe party would be complete, though, without a renewed promise to seize Zimbabwe’s last few hundred white-owned farms. Yep, Bob was “playing the hits.”

Opposition leader skips the bash

Top opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai - now the country’s prime minister in a fragile new coalition government – skipped the party.

The first few weeks of the new government have not gone well, reported the Monitor’s Africa Bureau Chief, Scott Baldauf, in a story last week.

True, Morgan Tsvangirai, the country’s new prime minister and President Robert Mugabe’s sworn enemy, recently had a successful visit to South Africa, laying out a $5 billion plan to reconstruct Zimbabwe. But members of Mr. Tsvangirai’s own party remain in jail, including Deputy Agriculture Minister Roy Bennett, who was arrested on charges of “banditry and terrorism.”

And supporters of Mr. Mugabe’s ZANU-PF party have invaded dozens of farms belonging to the few remaining white farmers in Zimbabwe. And across the country, squabbling between members of Tsvangirai’s Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) and ZANU-PF – ostensibly allies in government – has turned increasingly violent.

Mugabe’s birthday bash casts a “let them eat cake” aura about his leadership. At least, that’s how it looks from the outside.

Anyway... tell me what you think and what are your views on the matter... KIS

...then we get the chance.

Ok so we have all these ideas and this infinite aspiration or need, as some would prefer, to come up on top in this ruin of a situation that we have in Zimbabwe...question, now, is can we make it play out right? As a System/Business Analyst, I am often faced with problems that are solved by means or following procedure or rather a laid out plan of action. We start by planning then analysing then designing then implementing then finally, but continually, qw support the system.I regard this move we are commiting to of bringing together ideas is probably th first step of identifying and making out the goals that we need to achieve in order to bring up as many successful and soon to be prominent figures in the business community in Zimbabwe and even in the world over. I believe God gave each person a gift that is very important and will play a very major role at a specific time and place...more like the peices of a jiggzle puzzle. So coming together on this platform will play a significant role in connecting people and fitting each piece of the puzzle in correctly and obviously at the best place. Eventually some of the player?contributors/members of this blog will meet and materialize the ideas that they have conceived and some might never meet or they will, instead, decide to remain annonymous to each other but interact from different parts of the world or even start an internet community of businesses but whatever the end structure that people will decide to form, the most important thing is that ideas are going to be shared and hopefully brought to reality. So you just never know maybe that "silly" idea of yours might just make you the next "most influential businessperson".

Most said and done, lets get this ball rolling. I am sure most of us have witnessed the mess that Zimbabwe is in and more have actually experienced it first hand. I have experienced it and must say it's a really sad outcome of the decisions that our leaders have made but alas, our true characteristics are exclaimed under imense pressure so shall we take o arms or let the intellectually capacity make headway? I would go with the later. I often spend my time with business minded people and those with ideas of coming out on top regardless the situation and some even using the situation to gain an advantage and try to move to the top and this just gives me even more enthusiasm to go out and try to assemble as many minds to pull the business community of Zimbabwe out of the quagmire that it has fallen into and each and everyone of you is going to play a part and finally make this puzzle make sense. So as we take up this newly assigned task of ours, I would like to wish everyone a merry christmas and and a happy 2009 and above all ,good health and the abundunt mercy and blessings of our heavenly Father. So, any ideas?
